Speaker Johnson praises Trump as ‘resilient’ after second apparent assassination attempt: ‘One of a kind’

Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson of Louisiana praised former President Donald Trump for his response to the second assassination attempt in less than two months, telling Fox News on Monday that he was “rebounding” and in “good spirits” after the situation calmed down on Sunday.

“No leader in the history of America has ever been so attacked and yet emerged stronger, more resilient,” Johnson said during an appearance on “Fox & Friends.”

“He's one of a kind. He never stops fighting for the American people. I had the opportunity to meet and speak with him shortly after the incident and it was really inspiring.”

Johnson and his wife, Kelly, visited the former president at Mar-a-Lago after suspect Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, was arrested outside the Trump International Golf Course in Palm Beach County, Florida, on suspicion of possessing an AK-47 and attempting to shoot President Trump.

Johnson said his visit to Mar-a-Lago was delayed because local police stopped traffic because of the incident, but he arrived at roughly the same time as Trump.

Just two months ago, Trump came even closer to victory at an outdoor rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, when gunman Thomas Matthew Crooks opened fire from a nearby rooftop, saving his life only by shifting direction at the last moment and letting a bullet graze his ear.

Johnson said surviving two close calls was no mere coincidence.

“It's amazing, and Kelly and I spoke with him at length about it. No one can deny it. God saved his life, twice. I told him it reminded me of bulletproof George Washington, our first president, who escaped gunfire as a colonel in the army. There was a famous incident in the French and Indian War, everyone was firing at him, the bullets went through his jacket, and he didn't go down,” he said.

“Ironically, that incident occurred less than 50 miles from where President Trump was shot on stage in Butler, Pennsylvania. This was not an accident. This was not luck. I believe it was providence.”
