LOS ANGELES, Calif. — The California chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) is opposing a Los Angeles City Council proposal to bar anti-Israel protesters from the entrances of synagogues.
The proposal is a response to heightened anti-Semitism in the city following anti-Israel protests, particularly several incidents in June where pro-Palestinian activists targeted a local synagogue, in one case blocking the entrance.
City Council Members Katie Yaroslavsky and Bob Blumenfield Requested They took action in June, calling for more resources for safety. They are the authors of the new proposal, Need Establish eight-foot “bubble zones” around synagogues and other religious facilities.
of Los Angeles Times Explained The proposal was announced in August, and it was reported that “it would be a misdemeanor for protesters to intentionally block the entrance to a health care facility, school or religious institution or demonstrate within eight feet of anyone attempting to enter. An eight-foot protective 'bubble' would be required within 100 feet of the facility's entrance. This would apply to mosques as well as synagogues.”
CAIR opposes the proposal, arguing it deliberately targets pro-Palestinian, anti-Israel activists.
The letter from CAIR California, which appears to be undated, asks Los Angeles city attorneys to investigate the “context behind” the proposal, saying it “targets the First Amendment rights of pro-Palestinian demonstrators.”
The letter claims that “peaceful pro-Palestinian protesters have braved the ongoing human rights violations in Gaza” at a local university and elsewhere. (There have been multiple instances of violence by “peaceful” protesters; this reporter was assaulted by “peaceful” protesters at a campus “encampment” in April.)
CAIR national executive director Nihad Awad said he rejoiced over the Oct. 7, 2023, terrorist attack.
