Titans coach Brian Callahan didn't mince words Sunday after the fiery message he sent to second-year quarterback Will Revis during the team's Week 2 loss to the Jets was caught on camera.
Standing at the podium in front of his home Nashville crowd after the 24-17 loss, Callahan blamed Revis for a gaffe in the second quarter: After a failed pass to running back Tyjay Spears at the Jets' 10-yard line resulted in the ball being recovered by Gang Green, an exasperated Callahan yelled, “What the hell are you doing?”
“If I had to guess, I think the cameras caught it pretty clearly,” Callahan told reporters. “Yes, I was upset. It was stupid. It was exactly what he did last week, costing us points in the red zone. That's the way it is. He's a grown man and knows better. So I was really upset that he cost us three points in a game that we probably needed.”
Revis and the Titans were leading by seven points when the former second-round draft pick lost the ball under pressure.
This marked the second straight game that Revis committed a turnover in a key moment: He was intercepted late in a Week 1 loss to the Bears. Call it “Stupid theatre.”
“I can't let that happen,” Revis said later.
In his first season with Callahan after the firing of Mike Vrabel, the Kentucky native completed 19 of 28 passes for 192 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He was also sacked four times.
Callahan, the former Bengals offensive coordinator, added Sunday that Revis “has to protect the ball better.”
“That's not acceptable. He's got to protect his team better,” Callahan said. “… It's not acceptable to do something like this.”
The Titans enter next Sunday hosting the Packers and former Tennessee State quarterback Malik Willis looking to avoid a dreaded 0-3 deficit and perhaps another Levi's fiasco.
Willis, a former third-round pick of the Titans in 2022, was traded to the Packers in late August and is fresh off a win as a starter in place of an injured Jordan Love.
