‘It’s a zoo out here, man’: Teen girl killed after driver plows into crowd following late-night fight in downtown Minneapolis

After a late-night fight involving young people in downtown Minneapolis over the weekend saw a hit-and-run driver plow into a crowd, killing a teenage girl, business owners and residents are fed up with the lawlessness. WCCO-TV reported..

According to a release from the police department, officers responded to the scene around 12:23 a.m. Saturday for a report of a hit-and-run crash on Hennepin Avenue North on 5th Street. Police say the female suspect was driving the wrong way up Hennepin Avenue and then down 5th Avenue into a crowd of people.

Chief O'Hara added to WCCO, presumably referring to the teens involved, “I'm not their parent, you know? So I certainly don't want my child to be on Hennepin Street at 12:30 at night in the middle of all the mayhem going on at the bar.”

Six people were taken to Hennepin Healthcare, including a 16-year-old girl who later died, one other person with life-threatening injuries and several others with minor injuries, the department said, adding.

“The video of this incident is truly horrifying. Words cannot express how tragic and senseless this is,” Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara said, according to WCCO.

The department interviewed residents and business owners, who expressed outrage and frustration at the out-of-control situation that seems to be happening on a weekly basis.

“This place is a crazy hospital,” one downtown resident told WCCO. “It happens every weekend. I'm surprised it didn't happen sooner,” the resident told the station off-camera, adding, “This place is a zoo. And it's not getting any better.”

“City leaders should be here at 11 o'clock at night, walking around and observing the police shortages and what's going on,” business owner Daniel Stensgaard added to the station.

Chief O'Hara added to WCCO, presumably referring to the teens involved, “I'm not their parent, you know? So I can tell you that my child is not going to be out on Hennepin Avenue at 12:30 in the night with all this mayhem going on at the bar.”

The police report also noted that the suspect fled downtown in a vehicle but was pursued by witnesses, the station reported. Police noted that representatives from multiple law enforcement agencies stopped and arrested the suspect in the 2300 block of Bryant Avenue North, and he was then booked into the Hennepin County Jail, WCCO said, adding that charges are pending.
