Caitlin Clark might have received a costly technical foul if not for some smart prevention from her teammates.
During the second quarter of the Fever's 110-109 win over the Wings on Sunday, Clark drove to the basket and drew contact, but when the whistle blew, it was for an offensive foul.
Clark became enraged and started yelling at the umpires but was stopped by Kelsey Mitchell and Aaliyah Boston.
Clark has six technical fouls so far this season, with a seventh resulting in an automatic suspension by the WNBA.
If Clark had received a technical foul, she would have been forced to miss the Fever's regular-season finale, Thursday on the road against the Mystics.
“I didn't expect to get a technical foul tonight and I feel really bad for the guys in D.C.,” Clark told reporters after the game. “I didn't want it to happen. I did my best, but my teammates handled it really well.”
Fever coach Christy Sides said Boston and Mitchell's technical foul elimination was “just good team chemistry.”
“They all know what Caitlyn does and they know that she's doing great things,” Sides continued. “She's just special and they know it's her passion and it's her passion. They all know when she gets to that stage and when she needs a little bit of help to get out there, and I'm grateful for that.”
Clark made 10 of 22 field goals and 6 of 14 3-pointers for a career-high 35 points in the win.
The Fever finished the season with a 20-19 record.
Indiana is the sixth seed in the WNBA playoffs and is currently scheduled to face the Suns in the opening round.
