NewsNation host Chris Cuomo said In a lengthy monologue on his show on Monday, he said he called former President Trump after the latest assassination attempt because he was “ashamed” of the media's “unacceptable” indifference to the “threat” on his life.
Cuomo is no fan of Trump, but he told the crowd he was troubled by “the lack of response to the second wave of attacks against him in recent months.” [suspect] “What if it was your father? Or Kamala Harris? Or, hell, President Biden? Do you think we would just shrug our shoulders and talk about the Secret Service and funding and think it's crazy that something like this is happening in our country? The response would be, 'Oh, don't make a big deal out of it.' He had an AK-47 pointed at him! This response is unacceptable, and it's the second time the media and politicians have gotten away with downplaying something that should be causing panic.”
“To be honest with you, I don't know how he could carry on racing. I don't know how he got up after being shot in the head. People who try to downplay it need to look at their thinking. He got up, pumped his fist, carried on racing and barely talks about it.”
Cuomo also aimed his criticism at Biden and Harris, saying it was “disturbing to see a sitting president express false concern and hear so little from Democrats who want to lead the charge after what happened with Trump.”
The host also spoke about the steadily growing sociopolitical division in the US, noting how journalists are adding fuel to the fire: “Division gets you paid, division gets you clicks, division gets you followers. Dividing is definitely a way to get famous, especially in digital media.” Cuomo added that people like Trump's would-be assassins “feel all the animosity.”
And, despite being a critic of Trump, she said, “I called him today because I'm ashamed of our response and lack of response to the threats made against him. My thoughts are with his family. You might be shocked and say, 'Well, that's what he wanted,' but that's your choice and I think it's the wrong choice. OK? Unless we're judging ourselves, we need to get out of the judging business and start rewarding better.”
“Honestly, I don't know how he's continuing to campaign,” Cuomo added. “I don't know how he gets up after being shot in the head. And people who try to downplay that need to examine themselves. He gets up, he pumps his fist, he continues to campaign. And we barely talk about it.”
Cuomo's monologue continues:
So I reached out to Trump. I just wanted to say, “Listen, I'm really sorry that this happened and that this is how he's being treated.” Not because I agree with his politics or what he says. I criticize him all the time, that's my job, and he deserves to be criticized. But he shouldn't have had to go through this. A guy pointing an AK-47 at him while he's playing golf? And then finding solace in the fact that he wasn't hit by a bullet? That doesn't work for me. If I was going through what that guy went through, [Trump]If he couldn't remember what he'd been through in the last two months, I don't know where I would be. You'll never see me on TV again. I would never do that. I don't know how he does it. He has kids, they're adults, he has grandkids, he has a wife. And people are telling me… [former first lady] Melania Trump worries there's a conspiracy [her] Her husband. How could she not? I don't think she's right, but I completely understand why she feels that way and why people mock her. And her husband has a guy point an AK-47 at him? Where are those people apologizing? It's time to say, “Melania Trump, I shouldn't have attacked you for suggesting that there might be something more going on. I understand your paranoia. I understand how you feel. You have a right to do so.” There's nothing wrong with saying that, being a basic decent human being. The situation is so out of control, so far from where we should be, from how we should be. And I don't know what to do. I don't know.
