Costo and affordable apartments will be housed under one roof in upcoming LA development

Construction began this week on a new mixed-use building in South Los Angeles with affordable apartments upstairs and a Costco downstairs, with a groundbreaking ceremony scheduled for Wednesday.

The proposed development at 5035 Coliseum Ave. in Baldwin Village will be the first in the U.S. to feature Costco as an anchor retail tenant, according to developer Thrive Living.

In a statement, the company said the “state-of-the-art” superstore will offer residents and locals “fresh produce and health foods, as well as optical services, a pharmacy and delivery services to meet the needs of local businesses.”

The project will feature popular wholesale retail stores on the ground floor and 800 apartments on the upper floors.

According to Thrive Living, the project will be the first mixed-use development in the country to feature Costco as an anchor retailer.
The development will include 800 apartments, including 184 units for low-income families.
The mixed-use building will be built in South Los Angeles.

According to Thrive Living, about 23% of the homes (184 units total) will be provided to low-income households, with the rest being offered as unsubsidized affordable and workforce housing.

The project is also expected to bring thousands of new construction jobs to the region.
