Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called on Monday for Americans to be “criminally prosecuted” for statements that sound like Russian propaganda.
“I think there are Americans who are engaging in this kind of propaganda, and I think prosecuting them civilly, or even criminally, would be more of a deterrent,” she said in an interview with MSNBC's Rachel Maddow.
Maddow highlighted recent actions by the Biden-Harris administration's Justice and State departments against Russians who allegedly promoted pro-Russian propaganda through a Tennessee-based Canadian-owned media company that works with podcasters popular with conservative and independent audiences. The Biden administration has also accused Russian entities of trying to influence the 2024 presidential election through websites that appear to be legitimate news sites.
The Justice Department said in its indictment that the podcasters were misled and did not know that the Tennessee-based company they were working with was also receiving payment from the Russians, but the left has accused them of being Russian agents simply because they did not support the war in Ukraine.
Clinton called for Americans to be criminally prosecuted for “parroting” behavior.[ing] The “Russian talking points” apply to anyone who expresses opinions that are deemed to be Russian propaganda without any basis.
Clinton also accused Republican lawmakers of taking to the “floor of Congress” and parroting “Russia talking points”.
She took a more ominous tone, suggesting that action should be taken.
“I think we need to expose all the connections and make it very clear that you can vote however you want, but we are not going to allow adversaries, whether it be Russia, China, Iran or anyone else, to try to fundamentally influence Americans about how we should vote when it comes to choosing our leaders,” she said.
