An attack targeting walkie-talkies used by Hezbollah in Lebanon has killed several people and injured hundreds.
Thousands of communications devices used by designated terrorist groups exploded across the country, killing at least three people and injuring hundreds.
video It emerged shortly afterwards that an explosion, believed to have been caused by a walkie-talkie, had occurred at the scene of the funeral of three slain Hezbollah members and a child.
of Daily Mail They then reviewed the video and appeared to confirm that the radios had been purchased by Hezbollah about five months ago.
This was during the same period that Hezbollah purchased a large number of pagers that had been similarly blown up by Israel's intelligence service, Mossad, the previous day.
In one old communications equipment explosion, a pager exploded due to a small amount of explosive material that was likely embedded in the device during manufacturing, injuring approximately 3,000 people and killing 12.
of Daily Mail, The Israel TimesOther media outlets reported that Israeli intelligence was responsible for the explosion.
The Mossad allegedly placed in the bomb a small amount (reportedly less than 20 grams) of a substance called pentaerythritol tetranitrate, also known as PETN, which is similar to nitroglycerin and is the main ingredient in the plastic explosive Semtex.
PETN was placed inside a walkie-talkie and remotely increased the temperature of the battery, causing it to explode.
At least one of the explosions occurred near where the Iran-backed Hezbollah group held a funeral for people killed the previous day, and thousands of pagers used by the group exploded across the country, wounding many of its fighters.
A Reuters reporter in Beirut's southern suburbs saw Hezbollah members quickly remove batteries from walkie-talkies that had not yet exploded and dump the parts into nearby metal barrels. The Lebanese Red Cross said in a statement that it had dispatched 30 ambulances to respond to the multiple explosions in different locations.
After briefly being thrown into disarray by the pager attack, the group said it had fired rockets at Israeli artillery positions on Wednesday, its first attack on a longtime foe since an explosion wounded thousands of fighters and raised fears of a wider Middle East conflict.
