Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) said during a television appearance that some lawmakers suspect the US Secret Service may have spies in the wake of the second assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. Breitbart News Daily.
Host Mike Slater said the second assassination attempt on Trump meant “the aura of Secret Service invincibility” was fading, making it easier for bad actors to target the former president.
“That's a great point. The barrier to entry into the assassination mess seems to have been lowered,” Gaetz said, noting that some of his colleagues suspect something more nefarious is going on within the Secret Service.
“Some of my Republican colleagues are open to the possibility that there was a mole within the Secret Service who provided weak information,” he said. “I've never seen evidence of that, but some of my colleagues who are very intelligent on this subject would say that, given the extraordinary circumstances and the fact pattern, it's a possibility that can't be ruled out.”
Gaetz said what's more likely is that “there is so much contempt for Trump in some government agencies and a desire to de-emphasize him that they're willing to give him less protection, to not surround him with authority figures, and to tolerate this kind of virtue signaling that wastes protection resources because, frankly, deep down they don't think much of Trump.”
“They don't really think about safety or security, and I think that disregard creates this dynamic,” Slater said.

Gates said it would be extremely worrying if it turned out that the suspect, Ryan Wesley Routh, was “contacted, encouraged and funded by foreign entities.”
“That's very disturbing. Just days before this assassination attempt, I had a Department of Homeland Security official come into my office and warn me that a Ukrainian hit team was operating in the country, and then this guy shows up, draped in a Ukrainian flag, and fires shots at Trump National. That disturbs me. Those connections have to be investigated,” he said. “And I think it's highly likely that the shooter had foreign connections that were involved in funding some of his operations.”
