Arch Manning draws first Texas start after electric fill-in game

The speed show will also be starting this week as obviously incredibly fast quarterback Arch Manning has been officially announced as the starter for Texas on Saturday against Louisiana-Monroe.

Starting pitcher Quinn Ewers will miss the game with an abdominal injury.

Manning replaced an injured Ewers in the second quarter of last week's 56-7 win over UTSA and lived up to the high expectations.

The nephew of Peyton Manning and Eli Manning completed 9 of 12 attempts and scored four touchdowns, as well as a 67-yard rushing touchdown, breaking Tyreek Hill's best speed time of the 2024 season.

Manning's top speed was 20.7 mph, while Hill's top speed so far this year is 20.3 mph, which is also impressive.

“When you get that adrenaline going, it makes you run a little faster,” Manning said after the win.

While the entire college football world seems anxious to see Manning take to the gridiron with his star-studded lineup of offensive linemen and playmakers, Louisiana-Monroe is making its position clear.

“The thing is, we have some guys on our team that played against him in New Orleans and we've had some guys beat him already,” defensive coordinator Ernest Hill told reporters earlier this week. “So they're not really intimidated by him, so they're not going to be intimidated by him coming here.”

Ignorance may be bliss for Louisiana-Monroe, which lost by a staggering 44.5 points on Saturday.

But the Warhawks, like the Longhorns, started the season 2-0 with wins over Jackson State and UAB.

Manning, who has thrown just 16 passes in his college football career, is the sixth-most likely to win the Heisman, even though playing time is unclear when Ewers returns.
