Harris: ‘If somebody breaks into my house, they’re getting shot’ during event with Oprah

While speaking about important issues with Oprah Winfrey during a campaign event Thursday night, Vice President Harris said that if someone broke into her house, they would be shot.

“If someone breaks into my house, they will be shot,” she said, laughing. “I probably shouldn't have said that. My staff will deal with it later.”

Her comments were in response to Winfrey mentioning that she is a gun owner. The vice president has publicly stated that she is a gun owner and mentioned it again during last week's debate with former President Trump.

Thursday's event included talks about gun violence prevention, and Harris was joined by a survivor of the Georgia mass shooting earlier this month. She was shot twice during class and attended the event wearing a cast. The Apalachee High School shooting happened earlier this month when 14-year-old student Colt Gray opened fire, killing four people.

During the show, Harris spoke about her gun violence prevention policies, including banning assault weapons and promoting universal background checks.

“On the issue of gun violence, I think for too long some people have been pushing this completely false choice between you being for the Second Amendment or you want to take away everyone's guns. I'm for the Second Amendment. I'm also for an assault weapons ban, universal background checks and red flag laws,” Harris said, before Winfrey asked her about gun ownership.

During the debate, while discussing gun violence prevention policies, Harris referred to her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, saying, “Both Mr. Walz and I are gun owners.”
