The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted a resolution on Wednesday that effectively bans Israel from defending itself in any of the territory it seized in the 1967 defensive war, including Jerusalem's Jewish neighborhoods.
The resolution referred to a ruling earlier this year by the International Court of Justice (ICJ), led by judges from Lebanon, which is at war with Israel, which declared Israel's presence in Gaza, Judea and Samaria (the West Bank) and East Jerusalem illegal under international law. (Israel vehemently rejected the ruling, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declaring that “the Jews are not occupiers of their own land.”)
United Nations General Assembly Solution It demands that Israel evacuate all settlements from the West Bank within a year, including towns where Jews lived before Jordanian forces expelled local residents during the Israeli War of Independence in 1948. It also calls on Israel to end military activity in Judea and Samaria, and to remove passive measures such as the “wall” (which is a fence for most of its length) that keeps suicide bombers out of Israel.
Notably, the resolution never uses the word “terrorism” or acknowledges that Israeli military activity in the area is a response to attacks by Palestinian terrorist organizations against Israeli communities and Israeli civilians.
As Jerusalem Post attentionThe resolution also calls for an arms embargo against Israel for all weapons used in Gaza, the West Bank and East Jerusalem, and a boycott of Israeli goods from those territories.
Solution Passed 124 votes in favor, 14 against, 43 abstentions. Several European Union countries voted in favor of the resolution, which has no binding force and is considered merely advisory.
The Palestinian Authority has introduced a resolution in the UN General Assembly in violation of the Oslo Peace Accords. I swore The Palestinian Authority has previously declared that it would “dismantle and disband” its government if it seeks such a resolution against Israel.
