Martin Luther King III slammed comments that North Carolina lieutenant governor and Republican gubernatorial candidate Mark Robinson (R) allegedly made about Martin Luther King Jr. in 2011.
“I am not surprised that Mark Robinson has allegedly made inflammatory and offensive comments about my father, the Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. His glorification of slavery, derogatory rhetoric and bizarre portrayal of my father and his legacy should be deeply disturbing to North Carolinians and all Americans who oppose racism and bigotry,” King said in a statement Thursday night.
“We must all work to keep Mark Robinson away from the governor's office, which is why Andrea and I will be traveling to North Carolina this week to support Josh Stein and local candidates who will stand up for women, Black and Brown North Carolinians, and all the other people that Mark Robinson despises.”
aBomb CNN Thursday's report detailed a range of inflammatory comments the candidate allegedly posted on a pornography message board more than a decade ago.
CNN identified an account belonging to Robinson that contained comments in which he called himself a “black Nazi” and called for the reinstatement of slavery.
In 2011, he reportedly criticized the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., calling him a “communist bastard” and “worse than a maggot.”
The NAACP on Thursday called on Robinson to withdraw from the race.
“Someone who identifies as a Black Nazi and supports the reinstatement of slavery is not eligible to run for governor,” the group said. “We are nonpartisan, but we are not blind, and we will speak out against what is wrong.”
