The Biden administration announced Friday that it was awarding $3 billion in federal funding to 25 battery technology projects.
The federally funded projects touch on various aspects of battery production, including mineral mining and refining, battery recycling and battery materials manufacturing.
The money will come from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Act of 2021 and will go to projects in 14 states.
Batteries are a key component in the transition to climate-friendly energy sources. They help us store solar and wind power for when the sun isn't shining or the wind isn't blowing. Electric cars also run on batteries.
The administration said the projects will create more than 8,000 construction jobs and more than 4,000 operations jobs.
The selected projects are still subject to environmental reviews and other negotiations with the Department of Energy, so not all may ultimately receive funding.
