Sunday with James Bay: ‘I like to steal an hour at the skatepark’ | Sunday with…

what time do you get up? 7:30 a.m. I have trained my sweet, almost 3-year-old daughter to be comfortable waiting until then. To be honest, I am a morning person. At breakfast, I read the previous night's Today's Match My daughter used to be addicted to TV, but now she doesn't watch it. She likes to fish for paperclips with magnets on strings.

Sunday is growing season? Lots of activities. Mostly sports, then mud baths. Or going to church to play the Cubs. I'm not a religious person. I remember clearly once standing on a chair in the kitchen and screaming at my dad that I didn't want to go. Now I just indulge in laziness all day.

Work on Sunday? As a teenager, I worked in Sainsbury's to buy guitar strings. I taught myself to whistle whilst working as a trolley boy. I was skinny and had long hair. My boss came up to me during a shift and told me that a customer had complained about me, saying, 'That young woman needs to cheer up'.

Your own dream day? I'd love to be at home playing guitar or piano and being creative with no expectations, but honestly, I'll turn on my Playstation and play FIFA, drink some beer, play some music, and enjoy the things I put off in the early days of parenthood.

Extracurricular activities? I recently got back into skateboarding after a 17-year hiatus. Being in my 30s has been an advantage for me. I can get up early with my daughter and skate at 10am to spend an hour at an empty skate park. I have a lot of bruises and cuts.

Is it Sunday night? Once the kids are in bed, I can immerse myself in a few hours of creativity. I'll watch a documentary or listen to music. I've recently started drawing again. I need to tire my brain out before I go to sleep.

“Changes All The Time” is out on October 4th. James Bay is currently touring nationwide. February 2025 ((jamesbay.com)
