Former President Donald Trump, speaking exclusively to Breitbart News, said he was thrilled that Amir Ghalib, the Muslim Democratic mayor of Hamtramck, Michigan, has endorsed his presidential campaign against Vice President Kamala Harris.
“I was very impressed with him. He was a big fan of the Trump administration because he thought there would be no wars, except to defeat ISIS, which is what I inherited. But there was no war,” Trump said in an exclusive interview with Breitbart News on Sunday afternoon. “There was no October 7th. There was no Russian attack on Ukraine. He told me he looked at that and saw a world at peace. Right now the world is descending into World War III, and I can stop it. I'm the only person who can stop it.”
In a roughly hour-long phone interview Sunday, Trump told Breitbart News he was open to traveling to Hamtramck to campaign and meet with Arab American community leaders who are outraged by the failures of Harris and President Joe Biden's administration.
Asked if he would hold a rally or campaign event in Hamtramck, Trump said, “The answer is, if the opportunity arises, I would,” and added, “We can't continue like this with the hatred that's running rampant right now.”
Hamtramck's mayor, Ghalib, a Democrat and Yemeni immigrant, represents one of the largest Muslim communities in Wayne County, Michigan. Reportedly 60 percent are Muslim.
Ghalib was one of the leaders of a movement encouraging Muslim Democrats to vote “independent” against Biden in Michigan's Democratic primary earlier this year. That movement then morphed into a “Dump Biden” movement in the general election and is now known as a “Dump Harris” movement.
Ghalib is Breitbart News Saturday Speaking on the SiriusXM125 Patriot channel, Ghalib spoke highly of Trump, though he has not yet endorsed him. Ghalib told Breitbart News he had a “very productive meeting” with Trump in Flint last week and said he does not want a new war if Trump is re-elected president.
“I spoke to President Trump about the statistics here in Wayne County and how this used to be a Democratic stronghold and we always voted Democrat,” Ghalib said. “That's not the case here anymore.”
Then on Sunday afternoon, while Trump was speaking to Breitbart News, Ghalib formally endorsed Trump for president, signaling a major shift among Arab voters away from Democrats and toward Trump, a support that Trump touted on his Truth social account.
If even a small portion of this community were to break with Harris and join Ghalib in supporting Trump in this year's election, it could be devastating to Harris' electoral prospects. Again, well over 100,000 Arabs in Michigan voted “independent” in the Democratic primary, a number roughly equal to the margin between Biden and Trump in the 2020 Michigan election results. Losing this important demographic voting bloc for Harris could tip Michigan towards Trump, and the presidential election towards him. A Trump win in Michigan would make Harris' already very difficult road to the presidency even tougher.
