11th over: Australia 51-2 (Smith 9, Green 1) Potts keeps it going, leaving the two slips untouched, Green darting to the off side and taking a single to get off the mark, Smith pulls hard but Jacob Bethel manages to stop the boundary with a square leg sponger.
11th over: Australia 46-2 (Smith 6, Green) Another big man steps up to bat – the feisty batsman Cameron Green – and England are fired up.
Wickets! Marsh c Smith b Carse 24 (Australia 47-2)
Marsh hit Brydon Kearse at square leg for six but the bowler got past him with the very next ball, pushed harder and found the edge to win the battle of the big men. Jamie Smith took an easy catch. big Wicket!
10th over: Australia 41-1 (Marsh 18, Smith 6) Review upstairs! Steve Smith is out in the field, pinned lbw by Potts at slip outside the off stump. Smith quickly reviews with a T sign of contempt. He's right, the decision is overturned. The ball has slipped over. Earlier in the over he smashes a ball through the covers to Potts for four. Another fantastic duel between these two.
9th Inning: Australia 37-1 (Marsh 18, Smith 2) Kearse passes it full and Marsh shoves him to the ground for 4. Scoring is starting to get a little easier for Australia, who have struggled so far.
8th inning: Australia 33-1 (Marsh 14, Smith 2) Archer is in the fourth over. He goes all out and Marsh sweeps him off the pads with a flourish, an absolute Undercracker It prevents the ball from flying towards the midwicket fence.
7th inning: Australia 26-1 (Marsh 8, Smith 1) Carth replaces Potts. Something shorter? That's for sure. Marsh let out a low groan as a short ball hit him in the stomach. The physio ran off and was then brought back. Just a flesh wound. Nearly there! Marsh tried to kick with his back foot but failed. Then, with a leading edge, he happily went down to the other end.
6th inning: Australia 25-1 (Marsh 7, Smith 1) Wow. Archer had Smith bouncing around the crease and putting him in all sorts of trouble, with a succession of short balls on the chest and then a slightly longer delivery that caught him square on. Smudge weathered the over and nodded in approval.
5th innings: Australia 23-1 (Marsh 5, Smith 0) Marsh hits a dangerous single, Jofra Archer hits a shy one on stump… Oh dear! If the delivery had been hit Marsh would have been dead. Smith gets to covers to Potts and it remains unhit.
Round 4: Australia 21-1 (Marsh 3, Smith) Steve Smith is the new kid on the block and will likely start off with a shot at the non-striker's end. Potts snorted him at Headingley and sent a shot back off the bails. It's not like Smith has forgotten.
Wickets! Matthew Short c Rashid b Archer 14 (Australia 21-1)
Short stepped back and hooked Archer for a six, then tried the shot again on the next ball but was caught by Adil Rashid on the boundary! Short bowed and hit it three feet high for another six, but a small error in execution was his undoing.
3rd over: Australia 12-0 (Short 7, Marsh 3) Probing from Potts, he hit a good length and found some bites despite the windy conditions.
2nd: Australia 10-0 (Short 6, Marsh 2) Starting at the Lumley Castle End will be Jofra Archer, bringing back memories of when Darren Gough “amazed” Shane Watson as a youngster. Archer has decent leaping ability, reaching 90mph in the first over and using his speed to force the batsmen back to the crease.
1st over: Australia 6-0 (Short 5, Marsh 1) Potts, his dark King Edgar haircut standing out against the grey sky and biscuit pitch, comes flying with force. He looks set to get the ball to the keeper, encouraging the fast bowlers. Short and Marsh slip outside point for singles. Cut for four! Potts goes wide with his final pass and Short doesn't miss it.
