Social platform site X (formerly Twitter) has released its first transparency report since it was acquired by tech mogul Elon Musk about two years ago.

The global transparency report, published on Wednesday, included details about user reports of content that violated X's policies, the company's enforcement actions, government requests for information and content removals in the first half of 2024.

“Transparency is core to what we do at X,” a spokesperson said in a statement to reporters. “As a brand new company, we've taken time to rethink how we can best transparently share data related to enforcing our policies to keep our community safe.”

“Given the great progress we've made, we are pleased to be able to update you on the work we're doing every day,” the spokesperson added.

According to the report, between January and June, X received more than 224 million user reports, of which around 82 million – the majority – were about abuse and harassment.

40 million user reports were of violent acts and over 67 million user reports were of hateful acts.

In response to the violations investigated, X removed or tagged 10.7 million posts and suspended approximately 5.3 million accounts. The analysis found that 0.01% of all posts violated X's policies.

After Musk bought what was then the Twitter platform for $44 billion in October 2022, he quickly implemented fixes, rolling back content moderation policies, reinstating previously banned political accounts like those of Donald Trump and turning the network's “blue check” verification system into a paid service.

Following the billionaire's acquisition, outside liberal and left-leaning groups argued that sexism, racism and general hate speech would increase significantly on the platform, and that Musk's prioritization of “free speech” would have dangerous consequences.

However, the same group later conveniently refrained from mentioning that Musk's acquisition played a key role in removing child sexual abuse material and banning many of the accounts that were posting such illegal and offensive content.
