Harris Dodges on Difference Between ‘Price Gouging’ Plan, Price Controls

“I will never apologize for going after companies and corporations that exploit the desperation of the American people,” Vice President Kamala Harris, a 2024 Democratic presidential candidate, said in an interview with MSNBC on Wednesday when asked how she would implement a plan to ban “price gouging” without price controls.

asked Stephanie Ruhle, MSNBC host and senior business analyst for NBC.[A] A serious problem over the past few years has been inflation. Fortunately, it has subsided, but prices remain high. You said that you want to tackle this problem by going after people who engage in price gouging. But as a capitalist who supports free markets, how do you go after price gougers without implementing price controls? Because once you get into that territory, people start to get nervous and say, 'She doesn't know what she's talking about.'”

Harris responded: “Frankly, I will never apologize for going after companies and corporations that prey on the desperation of the American people. As Attorney General, I've seen this happen during emergencies, extreme weather, pandemics. A small number of companies — not most, not most — take advantage of people's desperation and gouge prices. Yes, I will go after them. Yes, I will go after them. And it's part of a more comprehensive plan for what we can do to lower the cost of living, including the cost of housing and the everyday needs of the American people.”
