Mackenzie Hughes begins Presidents Cup with wild beer chug

The 2024 Presidents Cup got off to a rocky start Thursday at Royal Montreal Golf Club as Canadian golfer Mackenzie Hughes pumped up the crowd by chugging beer.

Although Hughes was not selected to take part in the opening session of Four Ball, he appeared on the first tee box, electrifying the Quebec crowd and the international team.

The 33-year-old golfer is one of three Canadians on the team for this week's tournament and made the most of playing in front of his compatriots.

Hughes pulled out a can of Stella Artois and got down on one knee and threw back the adult beverage, much to the delight of his fans.

After finishing his beer, Hughes stood up and threw his arms in the air, further arousing the crowd.

Hughes was one of Mike Weir's picks to captain this year's tournament, which pits American golfers against teams from around the world.

The viral moment reminded me of the beer chug at the 2021 Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin.

Justin Thomas and Daniel Berger both pumped up beers before the afternoon session of that tournament, electrifying the crowd.

The Presidents Cup has been dominated by the United States for quite some time, winning all but one game over the past 30 years.

The tournament will run from Thursday to Sunday.
