Former ESPN columnist Bill Simmons added to the avalanche that collapsed with the firing of “Worldwide Leader” Zach Lowe on Thursday.
Mr Simmons said:bill simmons podcastsaid the Worldwide Leader “lost its soul” when the Ringer founder fired his close friend Lowe, whom he had employed at ESPN division Grantland from 2011 to 2015.
“I don't know. I wish I could explain ESPN, but I can't,” said Simmons, who worked at ESPN in the early 2000s before retiring in 2014.
“There's a little bit of misconduct, but as someone who's been suspended for three weeks before and has been suspended a few times on Twitter, when I look back at some of the things I've done, it's… It wasn't even a tenth of what it used to be. Some of the things people are doing now.
“Like Ryan Clark publicly challenged them about the extension? I mean, do they have a boss? Including whether they want to put a sex tape on Instagram. “Oh, okay. About that. takes a different view. Is he scheduled to appear on “First Take” on Tuesday? Okay, okay. My uncle wore them!
The decision to let go of Rowe That was largely due to his seven-figure salaryThe Athletic reported.
“I just don't understand it. Who is in charge?” Simmons said. What are you trying to do? ”
Among Simmons' criticisms of his former employers, Simmons' citation referred to two highly publicized situations involving Clark and Sharpe, two former NFL stars turned talents.
Ryan Clark publicly threatened to leave ESPN before re-signing with ESPN in February 2024.
Shannon Sharpe was caught having sex on Instagram Live for the whole world to see, but she was unaffected by the fiasco and returned to the air route days later.
ESPN recently lost another NBA talent with the shocking resignation of reporter Adrian Wojnarowski in early September, citing burnout.
He currently serves as the general manager of the men's basketball team at his alma mater, St. Bonaventure.
“If you're supposed to be the worldwide leader, why don't you have something like this?” Simmons said of the recent massive changes ESPN has endured in 2024.
“Last year, the NBA lost Doc in general. [Rivers]they lose J.J. [Reddick]lost lead color analyst twice after being fired [Jeff] van gundy [Adrian] Woj was just gone, and so was Zach Lowe. It's like my head is spinning.
“Now, just a guess as to what we’re going to get, I like Stephen A. [Smith]so this is no disrespect to Stephen A. I really think he's a good person. It feels like it's going in the direction of “It's a Knicks playoff game.” This is the entrance to Stephen A. And that's what they think people want, and I don't think they're right.
“The Zack Lowe moment is something that we remember like, 'Wow, remember when ESPN was creeping in this direction and they fired Zack and moved in this direction?' I feel like.”
Lowe, widely regarded as one of the best NBA writers in the business, will become a free agent as ESPN explores its path.
ESPN's decision to move on from Lowe appears to signal a change in the company's business strategy.
“They've missed out on ESPN Radio, they've missed out on the podcast business, but YouTube, TikTok, Snapchat, you name it, you name it, anything that's come up in the last 12 years, they're there in the best possible way. “Maybe that's their job,” Simmons said. “They're clearly seeing some kind of vision that's different than what we're seeing.”
“I noticed that Zach was trending on Twitter with Kendrick Perkins, and that's one of the interesting topics in this case. I look at it the same way they chose Kendrick Perkins instead.”
Simmons went on to say that Perkins' hot-take style of entertaining television viewers was not to his liking.
He had a simple suggestion for viewers who were dissatisfied with the film: “Don't watch it.”
“Right now they have locked in their position with Stephen A. They basically have to keep him. He can say his price.” Simmons is reportedly out of contract next year. said about Smith.
