The 1962 New York Mets are no longer the most lovable losers.

The Chicago White Sox lost their 121st game of the season on Friday night, passing the Mets for the most losses in an MLB season.

Chicago had won three straight games to avoid making disastrous history, but their luck didn't last long.

The Detroit Tigers scored two runs in the fifth inning with a wild pitch with the bases loaded and a sac fly, but Chicago cut the lead in half with Zach DeLoach's solo home run in the sixth inning.

However, in the seventh inning, with the Tigers trailing 2-1, Riley Greene added a run with a double and a wild pitch made the game 4-1. With this victory, the Tigers also advanced to the postseason for the first time since 2014.

Chicago had ace Garrett Crochet on the mound, but he pitched just four innings in his final start of the season.

The Mets went 40-120 in their first season (they went on to win the World Series seven years later, so the not-so-long future may be bright for the South Side). However, the White Sox may have a better chance of winning, but they must win each of their final two games.

It's been a downward spiral for the White Sox in recent years. After advancing to the postseason in 2021 with a record of 93 wins and 69 losses, they continued with 81 wins and then 61 wins. Currently, their number is just 39.

Perhaps the two biggest disappointments on the roster are Andrew Benintendi and Luis Robert Jr. The White Sox signed Benintendi to an $85 million contract ahead of the 2023 season, their most lucrative contract to date. But entering Friday, he was hitting .228 with a .690 OPS. As for Robert, he was once an MVP candidate and finished 12th in last year's voting. But this season, he posted career lows in nearly every statistic, hitting just .227 with an OPS of .666.

The team fired coach Pedro Grifol last month after posting a 28-89 record in the season opener, but Grady Sizemore's entrance into the clubhouse didn't bode well for him — The team he is in charge of has a record of 11 wins and 32 losses.

They say it will definitely happen next year, but it will be quite a turning point for this team.
