The major attack targeted Hezbollah's underground headquarters in Beirut's Dahieh district.
At the time the photo was released, it was unclear whether Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah had survived the attack.
Prime Minister Netanyahu appears to have made his speech knowing that an attack was underway. The press conference after his speech was cut short because a military aide whispered in his ear.
The prime minister's office announced that Netanyahu would return to Israel on Friday, taking the unusual step of traveling on the Jewish Sabbath for urgent national security reasons, and return on Saturday.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it was on high alert and ready for any action, defensive or offensive. There was no response from Hezbollah or other Iranian proxies in Israel as of 8:30 p.m.
