KATHMANDU, Nepal — Rescuers in Nepal retrieve dozens of bodies from buses and other vehicles buried in a landslide near the capital Kathmandu, as the death toll from floods rises to at least 148 and dozens more missing. It was recovered, authorities announced Sunday.
After three days of monsoon rains, the weather cleared on Sunday and rescue and clean-up operations were underway. Traffic remained blocked in Kathmandu on Sunday as three expressways in and out of the city were closed due to landslides.
Overnight, rescue teams recovered the bodies of 14 people who were buried in a landslide from two buses heading to Kathmandu. On Sunday, 23 more bodies were exhumed from vehicles at the same location, about 16 kilometers (10 miles) from Kathmandu, as workers searched for other bodies that may have been buried.
A further 101 people were injured in the floods and landslides, and 50 people are missing, Nepal Police said. The death toll was expected to rise further, with reports coming in from villages in the mountainous region.
In southern Kathmandu, which was flooded on Saturday, residents were cleaning up their homes as water levels began to recede. At least 34 people died in Kathmandu, which was the worst hit by floods.
Heavy machinery was used to clear landslides from roads while police and soldiers assisted in rescue operations. The government has announced that schools and universities across Nepal will be closed for the next three days.
The monsoon season begins in June and usually ends by mid-September.
