Baker Mayfield tried to set the record straight about something Tom Brady said during a recent podcast appearance.
Mayfield insisted he meant no disrespect toward Brady when he playfully took a jab at the quarterback-turned-caster on his “Casa de Clubs” podcast.
“A lot of it was taken out of context and it was never personal,” Mayfield told reporters after the Buccaneers' win over the Eagles. “That's exactly what he asked of his players, that's the aura of Tom Brady, and that's what he did to bring a championship here.
“Nothing personal, but yeah, when we talked before the game, he was obviously happy for me and he knows the guys, so I threw it on the microphone. I know how much fun it is to [Evans] and chris [Godwin] [because] He had to do the same. It's fun to be able to talk to guys like that about the same experiences. ”
Mayfield talked about the difference in atmosphere between himself and Brady, and some took that as a bit of a dig.
As part of a podcast interview, he said that “everybody was pretty stressed out” because Brady had everyone focused on winning.
“They wanted me to come in and be myself and bring some joy back to football, for the players who weren't having so much fun,” Mayfield said in an interview.
Brady countered him in the air during Fox's game call.
“I thought it was stressful not having a Super Bowl ring,” Brady said. “So I brought that champion mentality to work every day. This wasn't a daycare center. If I wanted to have fun, I'd go to Disneyland with my kids.”
Mayfield, who was alerted to Brady's comments, seemed agitated by them.
“As I said, some things are taken out of context,” Mayfield said. “He did it his way, that's why he has seven rings. So there's no need to say more.”
