Baker Mayfield believes Tom Brady created a “high-tension” work environment during his time with the Buccaneers. On Sunday, Brady made it clear he doesn't care if it stresses anyone out.
In a recent podcast interview, current Bucs QB Baker Mayfield said that while Brady's no-nonsense style “captivated” everyone, he also felt the future Hall of Famer was “stressing out everyone.” Ta.
Brady, who broadcast the Buccaneers-Eagles game on Sunday, addressed Mayfield's comments during the broadcast.
“I thought it was stressful not having a Super Bowl ring,” Brady said. “I had a champion mentality that I took to work every day. This wasn't a daycare center. If I wanted to have fun, I was going to go to Disneyland with my kids.
“There's a way to approach this game. It's just having the right mindset and trying to push each other outside of our comfort zone, and great teammates do that. When I come in, (Rob Gronn) You've got guys like Kowsky, you've got guys like (Mike) Evans. There's a lot of expectation on us, so we've got to make sure we go out there and deliver.”
This is exactly the response you would expect from Brady.
This isn't to say Mayfield can't win championships or lacks dedication. But there's a world of difference between someone who wants to win a championship and someone who is driven by an all-encompassing drive to win at all costs. Yes, there are some negative side effects of having such a mindset. Yes, it can create a high stress environment.
But, as Brady says, not reaching optimal performance levels and not being at your best can be stressful.
Brady changed the game forever by choosing not to allow himself or his teammates to underperform. What a great message for everyone, young and old, that there is no need to fear stress in the pursuit of greatness.
