Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) introduced the “Extinction Act” on Tuesday. If passed, the bill would require federal immigration authorities to prioritize the deportation of the more than 15,000 illegal alien sex offenders living in the United States.

Ernst announced the bill in response to a bombshell disclosure by Immigration and Customs Enforcement that revealed there were 662,566 noncitizens with criminal records on the national registry as of July.

Rechleitner cited sanctuary jurisdiction issues that prevent cooperation between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities.
“ICE acknowledges that some jurisdictions are concerned that cooperation with federal immigration authorities erodes trust with immigrant communities and makes it difficult for local law enforcement to serve immigrants. I am aware of this,” he wrote. “However, ‘sanctuary’ policies can end up protecting dangerous criminals who victimize the same communities.”
Rechleitner noted that from October 2020 to July 2024, ICE released 24,796 detention requests, 23,591 of which were denied by local law enforcement. . During the same period, ICE's Removal Operations issued 2,897 detainer refusal requests.
Ernst said his bill aims to protect the country where Democratic presidential candidate and Vice President Kamala Harris failed.
