Harris interrupts campaign schedule to visit Georgia, North Carolina in hurricane aftermath

Vice President Harris will suspend some planned campaign activities this week to visit Georgia and North Carolina due to the damage caused by Hurricane Helen.

Harris will visit Georgia on Wednesday and then head to North Carolina “in the coming days,” a White House official said. Both states, key battleground states in this election cycle, were devastated by the storm, leaving many people without power or water supply indefinitely.

While in Georgia, Harris will study the effects of the storm and receive briefings on the ground. He will also provide an update on federal actions taken to help Georgia and other affected states recover.

The vice president was scheduled to join his running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D), on a bus tour of Philadelphia on Wednesday. Walz will be accompanied by Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pennsylvania), who will continue his bus tour as scheduled the day after Tuesday's vice presidential debate.

Harris returned to Washington early Monday from a tour of the West Coast and visited the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) headquarters. The president is scheduled to visit North Carolina on Wednesday. He also said he planned to visit Georgia and Florida “as soon as possible” to assess the damage, stressing that he did not want to interfere with recovery efforts.
