Arizona State Police said the man had previously smoked methamphetamine. stab He murdered his mother and decapitated her body on Friday.
Police said they were called just before midnight Friday at a home in Glendale by a person who said they had found his sister decapitated and dead. They identified the deceased woman as 49-year-old Teresa de Jesus Cruz Rubio.
“Gonzalez said he smoked methamphetamine with a man on a bicycle, who reportedly stabbed his mother and made Gonzalez do the same.”
Police said her body was found near the front door with multiple stab wounds and a severed head nearby.
Police noted there were blood stains throughout the apartment, including in the shower, which had been left on.
Rubio's family told police they became suspicious after Rubio agreed to a family gathering that night but did not show up. They planned to celebrate her birthday with a surprise party.
When she didn't show up, they went to her house and discovered her body.
Family members told police they believed her 25-year-old son, Alejandro David Gonzalez, was living with her after he was released from prison. They also claimed he suffered from mental illness.
An investigation revealed that Gonzalez drove the mother's missing GMC Yukon to a gas station, where he was arrested. Police said there were blood stains on her feet and socks.
Gonzalez allegedly told police during questioning that he smoked methamphetamine with the man on the bicycle, then stabbed his mother and made Gonzalez do the same. However, police said that while the investigation is ongoing, there is no evidence that anyone else was involved in the crime.
The man had a history of aggravated violent crimes that began in 2021 with an attack on a police officer at a gas station. A week before his mother was killed, Gonzalez was arrested on suspicion of vandalizing a gas station. The Maricopa County Attorney's Office said there was not enough evidence against him and he was released before he allegedly beheaded his mother.
