Orioles swept by Royals in wild-card series to extend playoff game losing streak to 10

The Baltimore Orioles have the fourth-longest losing streak in postseason games in MLB history. The Kansas Royals defeated Baltimore 2-1 in the AL Wild Card Series on Wednesday, ending a 10-game losing streak for Baltimore and ending the season without a postseason win for the 10th consecutive year.

Baltimore's postseason losing streak dates back to the 2014 ALCS, when they lost a four-game sweep to the Royals as Kansas City won all four games by allowing a total of six runs. The winning streak was further extended in 2016 when Baltimore lost to the Toronto Blue Jays in the American League Wild Card Game on Edwin Encarnacion's walk-off homer in the 11th inning.

The Orioles then surprisingly won 103 games and won the AL East for the first time since 2014, immediately following a three-game winning streak over the eventual World Series champion Texas Rangers in the ALDS. Disposed of.

Now, with two straight losses to Kansas City, Baltimore is tied for fourth place with three other teams for the longest postseason losing streak in MLB history.

One of those other teams happened to be the Royals, who lost 10 straight in the playoffs from 1980 to 1985. The third team tied for fourth place was the Milwaukee Brewers, whose 10-game losing streak began in 1958, when the team was based in Atlanta, and the drought did not end until 1991.

The previous three postseason losing streaks were the Philadelphia Phillies' 11-game losing streak from 1915 to 1976, the Boston Red Sox's 13-game losing streak that started in Game 6 of the 1986 World Series and didn't end until 1998, and the Minnesota・Twins. The Twins hold the record for the longest losing streak in a postseason game, with an astonishing 18 straight losses, dating from 2004 to last year's postseason when they defeated the Toronto Blue Jays in the wild card round.

This year, Baltimore was battling to set up an ALDS matchup with the divisional rival New York Yankees after the Orioles defeated the Yankees in eight of 13 games. However, Baltimore was eliminated from contention for the division title and would end the season having missed out on the playoff sweep once again.

Meanwhile, the Royals head to the Bronx on Saturday to begin a best-of-five series against the Yankees. That matchup will feature three of the most prolific hitters in the American League this season: the Yankees' Aaron Judge and Juan Soto and Kansas City's Bobby Witt Jr.
