A new poll released Friday reveals that a staggering 69% of New Yorkers think Mayor Eric Adams should resign after being slammed with bombshell federal corruption charges. Ta.
A whopping 71% of Democrats, Mr. Adams' party, think Mr. Hizzoner should resign, according to the Marist New York City Poll, the first since the mayor was indicted. And 80% think Mr. Hezner should not be re-elected.
Nearly two-thirds (63%) of voters say Gov. Kathy Hochul should use her rarely-used powers as governor to force her resignation if she keeps her promise and fights the charges, according to the poll. I think so.
“It's hard to imagine Mayor Adams being treated any worse in the court of public opinion,” said Dr. Lee Miringoff, director of the Marist Institute of Public Opinion, which is behind the poll.
“Not only do New York City residents believe he did something illegal, they believe he should either resign or have Governor Hochul begin the process of removing him from office.”
The landmark case marks the first time the poll has been made public since the embattled mayor pleaded not guilty last week to charges of conspiracy, wire fraud and bribery.
Prosecutors say Mr. Adams, the first sitting New York mayor to be criminally charged, received $123,000 in free or deeply discounted hotel and airline tickets from Turkish officials and businessmen dating back to his time as Brooklyn borough president. Alleges that he received inappropriate gifts, including: Ten years ago.
Court documents say Mr. Adams offered favors by pressuring city officials to quickly approve the Turkish consulate in Manhattan in exchange for apparent freebies.
He also fraudulently obtained $10 million in matching public campaign funds through straw donors from foreign sources, the Fed alleges.
