Blaze Media Co-Founder glenn beck He encountered the only Federal Emergency Management Agency crew in Asheville, North Carolina, and the crew's response to his questions about disaster relief was shocking.
Beck and Rep. Cory Mills (R-Fla.) happened to find a FEMA vehicle on Friday to see what the federal government is doing to address the urgent needs of Hurricane Helen victims. I spoke with the staff.
“Let's get them into the system as soon as possible. Once we're done with the mass response, we'll go door-to-door.”
An unidentified FEMA official told Beck that he had just prepared a van with digital connectivity so people could be registered for disaster assistance, including money, generators, housing and other resources.
Asked how residents would know they were there, Mills said they could tell from television, but Mills pointed out there was no electricity.
“That would be the job of the news media,” the FEMA official said.
“But they have no power!” Mills replied.
“You'd be surprised, they're sitting in their cars charging their phones and listening to the radio,” he answered. “That's how they knew the distribution center was here.”
He further explained that door-to-door canvassing will begin at the behest of emergency managers working with local fire chiefs.
“So when does it start?” Beck asked.
“That's way over my head!” he replied.
The man introduced Beck to a crew leader named Patricia, who was similarly vague about when she would start going door-to-door.
“Once we're done with the general stuff. Wherever the masses are, we have to attack the masses first. So the masses are here. Let's get them into the system as quickly as possible. “Then we will go door to door,” she replied.
Ms. Mills questioned the crew leader about the van's difficulty in being seen by people driving by, but she replied that it was only a temporary location and would be moved to a car wash the next day.
“We don’t necessarily go door to door,” she said later in the conversation. “It’s not my executive anyway, there are 23 different executives!”
“Oh, I know,” Mills replied. “I understand how the bureaucratic levels of the department work. They don't always work together clearly.”
She went on to express anger over authorities saying they would only provide $750 per person in financial aid.
“People automatically think that's all they're going to get,” she continued. “No, it's not. It's just the beginning. There's going to be a bigger decline, so it's just the beginning.”
He also said people should verify that they are the owner of the home they are applying to limit fraud and abuse.
After the exchange was over, Beck expressed dissatisfaction with the answers he received.
“What a piece of shit!” he said.
Officials said the death toll from the hurricane had reached more than 220 by Friday, with more deaths expected as relief efforts continue. FEMA, which has faced intense scrutiny over its response to the disaster, has denied many of the accusations and dismissed some of the criticism as empty rumors.
The exchange can be seen on Glenn Beck's X account below.
