One Dead, Gas Pipeline Damaged Amid Russian Strikes on Ukraine

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) – Russian forces attacked Ukraine overnight with 87 Shahed drones and four different types of missiles, killing one person, officials said Sunday.

A 49-year-old man has died after his car was hit by a drone in Kharkiv region, regional governor Ole Sinievov said. Ukrainian authorities also reported that a gas pipeline was damaged and a warehouse was set on fire in the city of Odesa.

Ukraine's air force said in a statement that air defense systems destroyed 56 out of 87 drones and two missiles over 14 regions of Ukraine, including the capital Kiev.

It also announced that 25 drones had disappeared from radar “possibly as a result of air-to-air missile defense.”

The barrage came a day after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Saturday he would present a “victory plan” at an Oct. 12 meeting of the Ramstein countries that supply Ukraine with weapons.

Zelenskiy presented the plan to US President Joe Biden in Washington last week. Although its contents have not been made public, it is known that the plan includes Ukraine's membership in NATO and the provision of long-range missiles to attack Russian territory.

In a statement on Sunday, Ukraine's leader paid tribute to his country's military and also said he was “preparing for the next Ramstein.”

“They are proving what Ukrainians are capable of when they have enough weapons and enough range,” he said in a statement on social media. “We will continue to convince our partners that our drones alone are not enough. More decisive measures are needed and the end of this war will be near.”
