On Tuesday, the twin-engine Beechcraft 95 crashed into steep terrain about a mile west of the island's airport shortly after takeoff around 8 p.m.
According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Avalon Station, the department received a 9-1-1 SOS emergency alert from one of the cell phones involved in the crash.
Thanks to this notification, which provided authorities with precise GPS coordinates, they were able to quickly respond to the situation and summon local firefighters and Avalon Search and Rescue personnel. However, the discovery of the plane remained a disappointment as the lifeless bodies were disposed of.
“Under unified command, we were able to locate the remains of a twin-engine aircraft approximately one mile west of the Catalina Island Airport,” the sheriff's office said.
All five victims found were sadly pronounced dead at the scene.
The identities of the victims have not been released and there is no information on the specific cause of the plane crash.
“The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate. The NTSB will handle the investigation and provide further updates,” the FAA said in a statement.
