Ethel Kennedy, the widow of Robert F. Kennedy, has died at the age of 96, her family announced Thursday.
Mr Kennedy suffered a stroke on October 3 and was hospitalized earlier this month.
Former Congressman Joe Kennedy III announced Ethel's death in a social media post.
“It is with loving hearts that we announce the passing of our wonderful grandmother, Ethel Kennedy. She passed away this morning from complications from a stroke she suffered last week. Our mother was a passionate advocate for social justice and… Along with her lifelong work in human rights, Kennedy leaves behind nine children, 34 grandchildren, and 24 great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews, all of whom loved her dearly. Ethel's death comes amid divisions within the Kennedy family, with Robert F. Kennedy Jr. supporting former President Trump and angering his siblings and family members who support Vice President Kamala Harris. .

President Kennedy has previously noted that his wife, actress Cheryl Hines, is not completely on board. Mr. Hines posted on social media about his decision to withdraw, and Mr. Kennedy admitted that he was “very unhappy” with Mr. Hines' decision.
Kennedy has not yet publicly acknowledged Ethel's death.
