Musk unveils Robotaxi, unsupervised full self-driving future: ‘That’s what we want’

Tesla CEO Elon Musk unveiled a new self-driving car called Robotaxi and declared it “the bright future” at an event in California.

The two-seater vehicle, which has no steering wheel or pedals, is expected to be available by 2026 and will cost less than $30,000, Musk said.

“As you can see, we just arrived in a robotaxi, which is a cybercab,” Musk told the audience as he stepped out of a vehicle at Warner Bros. Studios outside Los Angeles.

“In a lot of science fiction movies, the future is dark and dreary and not what you want it to be. If we could look into a crystal ball and see the future, we would think, “I wish I could be there right now.'' That's what we want,” Musk said.

Analysts had to intervene to keep Tesla's fully self-driving mode from crashing

Robotaxis will be driven with the help of AI and cameras, but charging will be inductive.

“Autonomy gives you your time back,” Musk said.

“I think the cost of self-driving transportation will be so low that it can be considered akin to personalized mass transit. The cabs cost about $1 a mile,” he added. “Over time, we think the operating costs will probably be around $0.20 a mile.”

Musk said the self-driving car experience is Tesla “trying to give you a sense of what cities of the future will look like.”

“And then you get in there and you realize just being in a car with no steering wheel, no pedals, no controls, it's a really wild experience. And it feels great,” he said.

Musk also unveiled a self-driving robot van during the event, but did not provide many details.

“Could you imagine walking down the street right now and having this come towards you? That would be disgusting. I mean, this can carry up to 20 people, and it can also carry supplies. ” he said.
