Brown University Rejects Divestment from Israel

The governing body of Brown University, an Ivy League school known for its left-wing politics, on Wednesday rejected a proposal to sell stock in the university from an Israeli company or one with ties to the Israeli military.

of brown daily herald reported:

Brown University will not divest from companies with military ties to Israel, the school's governing body voted Tuesday.

The decision, announced Wednesday, follows a recommendation against the sale issued by the Brown University Advisory Committee on Resource Management (ACURM). The commission voted 8-2 against the sale recommendation, with one member abstaining.

As Breitbart News reported in May, Brown University was the first in the nation to bow to demands from pro-Palestinian activists for an on-campus “encampment.” According to an agreement with the activists, Mr. Brown would vote on the sale if they removed the encampment peacefully without police intervention.

One board member was furious and resigned, writing: “It is morally reprehensible that a divestment vote should even be considered, let alone implemented, especially in the wake of the worst assault on Jews since the Holocaust.” …For whatever reason, university leadership chose to reward, rather than punish, the activists who disrupted campus life, violated school rules, and promoted violence and anti-Semitism at Brown University. ”

pro-Israel organization “StandWithUs”; called Brown voted for victory against the anti-Israel (and anti-Semitic) Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement: “This victory in Brown rejects efforts to use divestment as a tool. “It's part of a broader movement across college campuses” that has caused division on campus while undermining Israel's legitimacy. BDS campaigns associated with terrorist organizations incite hatred and conflict while doing nothing to promote genuine dialogue or peace. Brown University's decision sends a powerful message that intellectual integrity and inclusivity trump manipulation, coercion, and hate. ”
