LARRY ELDER: Hurricane Politics Is All About Climate Change

“No one can deny the effects of the climate crisis any longer. At least we hope they don't. If they do, they must be brain dead. Scientists report that warming oceans will cause rain to drop. They're getting stronger, and storms like Helen are getting stronger. They're not going to diminish. They're going to get stronger. President Joe Biden, October 2, 2024

Three years ago, Science News published an article with the following heading: “Hurricanes may not be becoming more frequent, but they are still more dangerous. There are fewer hurricanes today than there were about 150 years ago, research suggests. In terms of the number of people whose lives are threatened and the damage to property, more people are living and building in hurricane-affected areas. (Related: Chuck DeVore: Hurricane Helen surprises North Carolina in October)

If this sounds confusing and contradictory, let's take another look at the track record of the “experts”.

“The problem with almost all environmental problems is that by the time we have enough evidence to convince people, people are dead,'' says population biologist Paul R. Ehrlich. …We have to realize that in 20 years, unless we are very lucky, we will all disappear in a cloud of blue vapor. ” New York Times, 1969

“No real action has been taken to save the environment, Ehrlich argues. And savings are needed, too. Ehrlich says the ocean will be as dead as Lake Erie within 10 years. ” — Redlands Daily Facts, 1970

“Scientists predict a new ice age by the 21st century. Air pollution could wipe out the sun, causing a new ice age in the first third of the next century…(I) If current rates of generation growth continue, electricity demand will decline.'' Cooling water would boil and dry entire streams and rivers in the continental United States. … (B) In the next century, “the consumption of oxygen in combustion processes worldwide will exceed all processes that return oxygen to the atmosphere.” Boston Globe, 1970

“The world could be 50 to 60 years away from a disastrous new ice age, a leading atmospheric scientist has predicted. The fine dust emitted inside could block so much sunlight that the average temperature could drop by 6 degrees Celsius. “Several years” — “five to 10 years” — “if temperatures continue to drop this much will be enough to cause an ice age!” he estimated. — Washington Post, 1971

“If global warming trends are not reversed by the year 2000, rising sea levels could wipe entire nations off the face of the earth, a senior United Nations environment official says.” Associated Press, 1989

“Dear Mr. President: …we feel obligated to inform you of the results of the scientific conference recently held here. Global climate deterioration on a much larger scale was a very real possibility, and indeed could be imminent, with natural causes leading to the last Ice Age. …the current rate of cooling is likely to be rapid enough to produce glacial temperatures within about a century.'' — Brown University Department of Geological Sciences, 1972.

“No matter how wildly the weather varies from place to place and time to time, when meteorologists measure average temperatures around the world, they find that the atmosphere has gradually gotten colder over the past 30 years. The trend is showing signs of reversing. Not yet.

“Climatologists Cassandra and others are increasingly worried that the weather anomalies they study could be the harbinger of a new ice age. The telltale signs are everywhere, from the Midwest to warmth-loving creatures like armadillos moving south.” Time Magazine, 1974

“[U]Unless drastic measures are taken to reduce greenhouse gas emissions within the next decade, the world will reach a point of no return. ” — Former Vice President Al Gore, 2006

“If we don't address climate change, the world will be destroyed within 12 years.” — Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, 2019

“We are all going to die!” — homer simpson
