OSLO, Norway (AP) — Norway is introducing temporary border checks at its borders with other Western European countries after internal security officials raised the terrorist threat level, police said Saturday.
The checks will be valid until October 22, police said in a statement.
The report cited a “difficult threat situation” and an announcement by security agency PST on October 8 that it was raising Norway's threat level from “medium” to “high,” the second highest on a five-point scale. .
PST noted that threats targeting Jews and Israel in particular are growing.
Although Norway is not a member of the European Union, it is part of the European ID-free travel zone known as the Schengen Area. It shares land borders with the EU and Schengen member states Sweden and Finland.
Police said not all travelers would be tested under the new regulations and there was no reason to expect delays at border crossings.
