Hot air balloon strike, collapse of New Mexico radio tower caught on camera

A hot air balloon crashed into a radio tower and plummeted to the ground during a popular festival in Albaquerque, New Mexico, causing a temporary fire.

Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office spokesman Kevin Carhart said the balloon was carrying three people during its descent around 8:45 a.m. local time Friday.

The incident occurred during the 52nd Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, a week-long event that fills the sky with more than 500 balloonists. colorful balloons.

Kurt Fargo captured a video of the balloon hitting the radio tower, causing the structure to collapse instantly.

This tower transmits a signal to local radio station KKOB-AM.

Photos posted by the station showed a radio tower destroyed after the crash.

Police said no one was injured in the incident.

This was not the first time a radio tower was involved in a hot air balloon crash. In 2004, KKOB Tower was hit by a Smokey Bear Balloon.

The accident caused the balloon to become stuck in the tower, endangering the lives of the pilot and the two boys on board.

The festival ended Sunday, but before landing in northwest Albuquerque on Saturday, the balloon briefly caught fire after hitting a power line, the Associated Press reported. There were no injuries.
