The ad came after the Chinese Communist Party mocked Taiwan with large-scale military exercises this week. China says it intends to “reunify” Taiwan, including by military force, while maintaining that Taiwan is a separate country. We recently celebrated National Day.
The US position is to maintain the status quo, including the supply of military equipment. Meanwhile, China's military has grown stronger and more aggressive against Taiwan and other countries in the region, and exercises around Taiwan have expanded in size in recent years. When Blackburn visited Taiwan again in 2022, he referred to it as a separate country, a stance that infuriated China.
