‘No Place in Professional Football’ for Finger Gun Gestures

As reported by Ian Rapoport, National Football League (NFL) executive Troy Vincent weighed in on the finger gun gesture, saying, “There's no place for that in pro football.”

Vincent's comments, made at a league meeting in Atlanta, come as NFL officials increasingly penalize players for gestures the league does not condone.

The NFL has faced vocal opposition to this crackdown.

For example, on October 4, 2024, Breitbart News reported that Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, referring to the growing opposition to finger gun gestures in the NFL, said, “This is my It's the Second Amendment to the Constitution,” he was quoted as saying.

Kelce was reacting to a 15-year-old unsportsmanlike conduct penalty against New York Jets wide receiver Allen Lazard. The penalty was a result of Lazard's alleged use of a finger gun gesture.

New York Giants wide receiver Darius Slayton has also spoken out against finger gun enforcement, believing there is a double standard in how penalties are applied.

FOX News reported Slayton was penalized for making a first-down gesture with his fingers after making a 41-yard catch during a game against the Seattle Seahawks on October 6.

“Dallas Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, and wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster celebrated a first down with the same gesture as Slayton last week.” Fox pointed out. However, neither Lamb, Mahomes nor Smith-Schuster were penalized.

slayton observed“It's cool when you do it.”
