A Washington, D.C., bartender fought back and won against three teenagers trying to rob his car over the weekend.
Why did Randy White mix it up with young con men? “I work too hard for what I have,” he says told WTTG-TV In the aftermath.
“I can't give up my wealth for something like that. That's not in me. I wasn't raised that way.”
Police said the harrowing ordeal occurred around 6 p.m. Saturday after White pulled into a Sunoco gas station on Ninth Avenue NW.
White parked his Jeep Grand Cherokee and noticed three teenagers standing nearby, WTTG said, adding that White didn't think much of their presence. That will change soon.
White went into a convenience store at a gas station, made some purchases and returned to his car, but the station's surveillance camera showed the three men attacking him. He told WTTG they demanded his belongings.
I haven't done anything.
Surveillance footage shows White fighting back and at one point throwing a right-handed haymaker at one of the crooks.
However, he told police one of the suspects managed to put him in a choke hold and pull him to the ground. Additionally, White told WTTG that one of the suspects dropped a rifle magazine (which police confirmed).
White's car keys then fell out of his pocket, one of the teens grabbed the keys, and two of the suspects jumped into White's Jeep and attempted to leave, the department said.
But White refused to give up or back down, WTTG said.
According to police, the suspect then got into his own Jeep with the criminals and continued the fight, but the criminals then gave up and left the scene, but the victim's Jeep was nowhere to be found.
Witnesses immediately called 911, WTTG said, adding that the teens took White's keychain, which was later replaced.
So what forced White to fight back?
“Where I grew up, you just…work too hard for what you have,” he told the TV station. “I can't give away my wealth like that. It's not in me. I wasn't raised that way.”
White also sent a message to his attackers, telling WTTG: “You should think about doing something else to make money. Stop hurting people. That's just ridiculous.”
Authorities are asking for the public's help in identifying the suspect, the agency said, adding that anyone with information is encouraged to contact D.C. police.
