The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) is running an ad in Montana featuring a rancher who “usually” votes Republican but is “supporting” Democrat Monica Tranel. There's one problem. He doesn't seem to live in the area.
The DCCC, in collaboration with Democratic Rep. Monica Tranel, who is challenging Rep. Ryan Zinke (R-Mont.), a former Navy SEAL, in Montana's 1st Congressional District, is working with ranchers Alfred and Kevin Tranell. It is running an ad featuring Anderson.
“All the land over there is owned by a millionaire, and there's a millionaire down south. There's another one right over there,” said one, and the other added, “They're taking us all away. Surrounded.”
“Alfred and his family have been ranching on this land for 75 years, so when the billionaires tried to squeeze them out, I helped them fight back and we won. “Monica fought for us when no one else would,” Tranel said in the ad, while a rancher said: “Monica fought for us when no one else would.”
“I usually vote Republican, but I support Monica,” he added.
However, there is one surprising problem. The ad shows Alfred and Kevin Anderson's location in Big Timber, about 90 miles away, rather than in Montana's 1st Congressional District. If they are residents of Big Timber, that means they are not residents of MT-01 and therefore are not legal voters in Tranel elections.
I wonder if they knew that when they created this ad, or if they deliberately scripted it to say they were “supporting” Tranel instead of explicitly “voting” for Tranel. It remains unclear whether it was expressed. Anyway, the meaning is there.
