New York woman carjacked, kidnapped, and brutally beaten by couple over disagreement about 10 cents: ‘A ride from hell’

A woman was kidnapped, carjacked and severely assaulted by two assailants before fleeing the harrowing ordeal, New York police said.

“She held my head down and punched me repeatedly, telling me I was going to die tonight.”

Alison Smith told WHAM-TV about the Sept. 13 incident that left her hospitalized.

The 29-year-old was exchanging cash at a Four Guys deli in Rochester when a woman offered to cover the tab and handed her a $5 bill. Smith only needed 10 cents, so he gave the woman $4.90 back and promised to go to his car to get the $1. At that moment, the woman was clearly upset.

“I said, 'No problem. I'll go across the street and get it from my car and it'll be fine,'” Smith said.

Instead, the man and woman threatened her with guns and got into their car. They forced Smith to drive them around town and even picked up another woman, whom they called “wife.”

Smith said they began beating her brutally, at one point shoving a broken pipe into her mouth, leaving her lip bloody.

“She hit me repeatedly while holding my head and told me I was going to die tonight,” the woman said.

The woman took the chance to fight back and save her life.

“Whoever's arm was on me, I bit down as hard as I could, and I let go a little bit,” Smith said. “And I ducked down and just ran.”

She headed to a convenience store, where someone called the police.

Rochester Police Department Lt. Greg Bello told WHAM that someone driving Smith's stolen car led police on a chase the next day before crashing into a curb. Several people jumped out of the car, but police were able to arrest one suspect.

Shawntae Hall, 20, was arrested and charged with assault, robbery, false imprisonment, and multiple counts of grand larceny, but was released and failed to appear in court. Police issued a warrant for her arrest.

Smith's father said: Wham His daughter was so badly beaten in the emergency room that she was unrecognizable.

“I want to see people protected,” Shane Smith said. “I mean, this can happen to anyone.”
