Deli offers surprising take on NYC classic: ‘My initial thought is diabetes’

This New York deli is a take on a Big Apple classic, and it's totally (dough)nut.

Those in the know at Manhattan's Best Deli & Grill can order a quirky twist on the popular breakfast classic: bacon, egg and cheese on a jelly donut.

The Audubon Street spot, a favorite among locals in Washington Heights, will sell confections packed with the popular protein and cheese combo for $6.50.

The traditional morning sandwich was served to the Post this week, oozing and stuffed with extra grape jelly, following a special order from a regular customer. It became a hot topic on Instagramsparked controversy among New Yorkers.

“What are you talking about now?!” said one shocked commenter.

“Jelly donut BEC should be banned from New York forever,” said another.

But not everyone was against the sweet and salty combination, including its developer and customer Anthony Birdman.

Jimi Rodriguez said the breakfast sandwich was “surprisingly not bad.” helaine sideman

“We had him make different kinds of sandwiches…and a friend and I came up with that concoction,” he told the Post late one night.

“It's a menu item that I don't usually order, but…” . It's surprisingly not that bad,'' Jimi Rodriguez, 23, a freelancer from Washington Heights, said after sinking his teeth into a swamp sandwich.

“It reminds me of something I saw at a fair in Connecticut,” Rosalie Durso said, staring at the strangeness.

Some deli patrons order jelly-covered BECs, but this donut is a step beyond that, said Manhattan Best owner Jamil Ali.

But health-conscious students at nearby Columbia University's School of Nursing balked at the ballooning breakfast orders.

Durso said the combination reminded her of the glazed donut sandwiches she saw at the state fair. helaine sideman

“My first thought was diabetes,” said student Katie McGeehan.

Zoe Carty, a classmate of McGeehan's, said: “I would like to try it, but I have a test coming up and I don't know if my stomach can handle it.''

Eric, a Manhattan Best regular, considered the jelly donut BEC before taking the safer route and opting for a salad instead.

“But I guess I’ll try that next time,” he said.
