Yankees legend Derek Jeter didn't take too well to his former crosstown rival's beloved mascot, leading to an awkward moment on Fox Sports' postgame show.
After the Mets' 12-6 NL CS Game 5 win over the Dodgers on Friday night, the Mets joined the Fox crew along with Kevin Burkhardt, Alex Rodriguez, David Ortiz and Jeter at Citi Field. down the third base line.
The awkwardness began with Ortiz's comments about the two, especially Mrs. Met.
“My girl is here. Come here, honey,” the former Red Sox great said before hugging Mrs. Mett and kissing her on the cheek.
He didn't stop there, even after Mr. Met came to jokingly confront him.
“If I win, I'll meet Kevin. Everything is shared,” Ortiz said, surprising Burkhardt and Rodriguez, who laughed. “I'm just making it up. Everything is shareable.”
“Is this a love triangle?” Burkhardt replied as Ortiz began to leave with Mrs. Mett. “I think this is a show on another network.”
Jeter, who won five World Series with the Yankees, including the 2000 Subway Series with the Mets, seemed to be having a good time up until that point.
But he quickly started organizing his note cards.
The former Yankees captain then banged on the desk, stood up calmly as Mr. Mett sat down in Mr. Ortiz's chair next to him, and began acting as if she were speaking on air.
Jeter briefly reviewed the whole situation.
“The wheels are coming off,” Rodriguez said with a laugh, summing up what just happened.
It looked like the Mets' season was going downhill, but Pete Alonso's early three-run homer cut the Dodgers' series lead to 3-2, giving them a comfortable victory.
They will look to force a winner-take-all Game 7 with Sean Manaea taking Hill in Game 6 in Los Angeles on Sunday.
