Ecuador's coach loses control during a remarkable World Cup moment

Ecuador faced a daunting challenge in their quest to advance to the finals.

But not only did they make it through, they did so in an exhilarating fashion. The Ecuadorian coach was overjoyed.

After a surprising defeat to Ivory Coast and an even more unexpected draw with Curaçao, it didn’t look good for them.

On Thursday, Ecuador had to secure a win against Germany, the strongest team in their group. The match kicked off with both teams netting a goal in the first ten minutes. It was Gonzalo Plata’s goal in the 77th minute, however, that ensured Ecuador moved on to the round of 32, leading to an explosion of celebration across the nation.

Coach Sebastian Beccasese was so thrilled that he leapt into the stands at MetLife Stadium to celebrate with his family.

As the game concluded, security had to help him back to the sidelines. When the final whistle blew, he and his coaching staff embraced in jubilant celebration. With this win, Ecuador advanced to the final round for the first time since 2006.

“We came back to life to feel,” Beccasese shared through an interpreter after the match. “Sometimes we experience the sting of loss, but other times, we savor victory. The challenge is to find a balance. This won’t transform my life, it won’t. But we need to relish this joy.”

Ecuador is set to face either Mexico or the top team from Group L in their upcoming Round of 32 match. Beccasese mentioned that both potential matchups will be demanding for his team, but he also emphasized that some things carry more weight than just the scoreline.

“It’s really about recognizing the moments in life spent with family, friends—my father isn’t here, but I feel he’s watching over us. We ought to celebrate this moment regardless.”

“I am thinking of the people of Ecuador, 19 million people, hugging each other, drinking beer and celebrating this historic victory.”
