On Friday's broadcast of HBO's “Real Time,” host Bill Maher reacted to the California Coastal Commission's rejection of SpaceX's proposal to increase rocket launches from Vandenberg Space Force Base. “It's the right thing to do,” some members of the group said, citing CEO Elon Musk's political beliefs. “The left believes we have a very different position on free speech than we have in the past, and they're not wrong,” he said, calling their refusal “arrogant”. He also said the left has become “all too willing to suppress freedom, including speech, for the sake of safety and misinformation.”
After criticizing some of Musk's tweets, Marr said, “He is suing the California Coastal Commission, a 12-member commission. He is launching rockets from Vandenberg Space Force Base. …He wanted a proposal to increase the number of launches. Now, again, one of the most impressive companies, an American company, but he wants a little more, so give it to him. No, the committee said no, and here's why: Commissioner Caryl Hart. I'm saying,”[W]The top executives of the companies I work with are actively participating in presidential elections and making it clear what their point of view is.[.]Yes, he can do that because he lives in America. Nothing to do with this, the right believes that the left is in a completely different position on free speech than they have ever been, and that they are not wrong, they are not wrong. This is arrogant. Don't punish anyone. It's like stopping production of Henry Ford's car because you don't like it. ”
Mark Cuban Billionaire co-founder of Cost Plus Drug Company Mark Cuban agreed with Mr. Maher's criticism of the secretary, but interjected that it was just another example of stupidity. Mr. Maher countered that the examples he gave were of powerful government officials, not random people, and Mr. Cuban said that it was not unusual for idiots to come to power. I responded.
Maher later said, “But what I find scary is how willing people are to suppress freedom, including speech, for the sake of safety or misinformation. It is something that I embrace,” he said. It's – not monopolized by anyone – or just power, just power. ”
Later in the show, Cuban said Musk is a hypocrite when it comes to free speech because he hasn't said anything about the threat to free speech posed by former President Donald Trump, the 2024 Republican presidential candidate, and said Musk is a hypocrite when it comes to free speech. Whenever they talk about freedom, freedom, freedom, it means free for the people we like.”
